Valves
Buildings are full of various valves that play critical roles for both comfort and safety. At the heart of most plumbing systems lie butterfly valves; they’re lightweight and affordable, offering amazing shutoff capabilities whenever required. A modern building depends on these valves to control things like airflow in the HVAC system throughout the structure. Expansion Joints
Every building needs to be crafted with expansion joints. As the name suggests, these joints are designed to let buildings move and expand. That’s where expansion joints come in; they’re specially designed gaps or joints in a building that allow it to move as necessary. You’ll never see these in your daily life moving around the building, but they’re arguably the most integral piece of structural engineering. Without them, building materials would crack when they expand, leading to permanent structural damage.
Insulation
You’re aware that insulation exists within a building, but did you know how important it is to the building’s daily operations? Good insulation will keep a building at the right temperature during different parts of the year.
Why does this matter? Because without it, a building would put too much pressure on its HVAC system. The heating element would be turned up too high for too long during the winter – and the same for the AC in the summer. This puts an increased strain on so many crucial components within the building’s structure and will lead to frequent problems.
So, while it’s easy to look at a building and think things like the foundations or steel beams keep it running, it’s actually the smaller things that take care of everyday functions. Without a good selection of valves in the right places, expansion joints, or insulation, a modern building is doomed to fail.
